Martyr Engine Cooling System Anodes are zinc sacrificial pencil anodes supplied complete with a brass plug, designed to help protect marine engines and their cooling systems against damaging galvanic corrosion.

Installed directly into the engine cooling system, the zinc anode is designed to corrode sacrificially instead of vulnerable metal components within the engine. Regular inspection and replacement of engine anodes is an important part of maintaining inboard marine engines operating in saltwater.

Available from Barton Marine NZ in a range of common sizes, these Martyr zinc engine anodes come complete with the matching brass plug, making them ideal for replacing a complete worn engine anode assembly.

What Does an Engine Anode Do?

A marine engine can contain several different metals exposed to electrically conductive cooling water.

When dissimilar metals are electrically connected in an electrolyte such as seawater, galvanic corrosion can occur.

A sacrificial anode is made from a metal specifically selected to be more electrically active than the components it is protecting.

Instead of allowing important engine components to corrode, the sacrificial zinc anode is designed to gradually deteriorate.

This is why an engine anode becoming smaller over time is normal – it indicates that the sacrificial material is being consumed as part of the corrosion-protection system.

Protect Your Engine Cooling System

Engine cooling passages and components can be expensive and difficult to repair if corrosion is allowed to progress.

Correctly specified sacrificial anodes can help protect vulnerable metal components within the cooling system.

Regular engine maintenance should therefore include checking the condition of installed pencil anodes.

Ignoring a heavily depleted anode may leave the components it was intended to protect increasingly vulnerable to corrosion.

Complete with Brass Plug

These Martyr engine anodes are supplied as a complete assembly consisting of the sacrificial zinc pencil anode and brass mounting plug.

This is particularly useful when:

  • Replacing an old complete engine anode assembly

  • The existing brass plug is damaged

  • Plug threads are worn

  • The existing plug is heavily corroded

  • Carrying complete spare anodes aboard the boat

  • Undertaking major engine servicing

Replacement zinc elements may also be available separately for applications where the existing brass plug remains serviceable.
